If you are submitting data for your count, you may need to provide documentation for an unusual or rare bird for that count.
Automatic Flagging System: Our data submission form automatically flags species as rare based on an underlying frequency service.
When a bird is flagged, submitters are prompted to provide:
A description of how they identified the bird, including diagnostic markings and sounds.
Any photos or media of the observation (used only for validation purposes).
These details are automatically available in the data platform to the Compiler and Regional Editor for review—no separate form required.
For Species Not Automatically Flagged: Some observations may be unusual for your count but not flagged by the system. If a Compiler or Regional Editor believes additional documentation is needed:
Reach out directly to the observer.
Request the same information: identification details, diagnostic features, and any available photos.
Rare Bird Form: The printable PDF and editable Word version of the Rare Bird Form are still available for limited use when needed. If used, completed forms should be sent directly to your Regional Editor (not to Audubon). Find Regional Editor contact information here.
