What is effort data and why do we have to collect it for the CBC?

Effort data is as important as bird observations—it's what makes CBC data scientifically valuable. More observers in an area will count more birds, even if populations are stable or declining. Read more about what effort data is collected in the CBC Guide.

The following information is necessary to collect in order to effort-weight CBC data:

  • Number of observers: Total field observers and feeder watchers (counted separately).

  • Number of parties: Number of counting groups active during count day.

  • Party hours: Total time spent observing by all parties, recorded by observation type (feeder, foot, car, etc.).

  • Distance covered: Miles or kilometers traveled by foot, wheelchair, car, and other methods (skis, boat, etc.).
